27 साल की भवानी ने ट्यूनीशिया की नादिया बेन अजीजी को 15-3 से हराकर राउंड आफ 32 में प्रवेश किया और ओलंपिक में कोई मैच जीतने वाली भारत की पहली तलवारबाज बन गईं लेकिन अगले राउंड में भवानी को फ्रांस की मेनोन ब्रुनेट के हाथों 7-15 से हार मिली।
यह एक ऐतिहासिक दिन था जब भारत ने ओलंपिक में तलवारबाजी में अपनी शुरूआत की। यह एक ऐसा खेल है, जो 1896 से ही ग्रीष्मकालीन खेलों में का हिस्सा है। इसी को ध्यान में रखते हुए भवानी ने पहला मैच जीता और फिर दूसरे मैच में विश्व की तीसरे नम्बर की खिलाड़ी मेनोन को कड़ी टक्कर दी।
मकुहारी मेस्से हॉल में एक सतर्क शुरूआत करते हुए, भवानी ने मेनोन को जोरदार टक्कर दी। पहले राउंड में 2-9 से पीछे होने के बावजूद भवानी ने हार नहीं मानी और एक समय स्कोर को 6-11 तक ले गईं लेकिन अंतत: फ्रांसीसी खिलाड़ी ने अपने अपार अनुभव का प्रयोग करते हुए भवानी को हार मानने पर विवश कर दिया।
इसी तरह पहले मैच में भवानी ने अजीजी को हमले की शुरूआत करने का मौका दिया लेकिन बाद में भवानी ने ट्यूनीशियाई को असहज करते हुए अंक पॉकेट में डालने के लिए बार-बार पिन किया। तलवारबाजी में, राईट ऑफ वे नियम का उपयोग यह निर्धारित करने के लिए किया जाता है कि दोनों एथलीटों के स्पर्श दर्ज करने की स्थिति में किस फेंसर को अंक दिए जाते हैं। इस नियम के तहत हमले की शुरूआत करने वाले फेंसर को प्राथमिकता दी जाती है।

बिना दूसरा मुकाबला खेले ही बी साईं प्रणीत का ओलिंपिक सफर खत्म हो गया है। प्रणीत को हराने वाले इजराइल के मिशा जिल्बरमैन ने अपना दूसरा मुकाबला जीता जिसके बाद अब प्रणीत के ग्रुप के टॉप 2 में रहने की संभावनाएं खत्म हो गई हैं। वह अगला मैच जीतकर भी आगे नहीं जा सकते।
टेबल टेनिस: सुतीर्था मुखर्जी का सफर खत्म
यू फो ने भारत की सुतीर्था मुखर्जी को मैच में कहीं भी मौका नहीं दिया. फू यो ने सीधे सेट में हराकर पहली बर ओलिंपिक में खेल रही सुतीर्था मुखर्जी का सफर दूसरे राउंड में खत्म कर दिया.. सुतीर्था को 3-11,3-11, 5-11, 5-11 से हार मिली।
शूटिंग: चलिफाइंग राउंड में पिछड़े अंगद और मेराज
पुरुष स्कीट के चलिफाइंग के पांचवें राउंड में मेराज अहमद खान और अंगद बाजवा ने 23/25 अंक हासिल किए। मेराज 25वें स्थान पर हैं जबकि अंगद 19वें स्थान पर हैं।
। भारतीय खिलाड़ी मनिका बत्रा तोक्यो ओलंपिक खेलों की टेबल टेनिस प्रतियोगिता के महिला एकल में सोमवार को यहां आस्ट्रिया की सोफिया पोलकानोवा से सीधे गेम में हारकर बाहर हो गईं। इससे पहले अपने से अधिक रैंकिंग की खिलाडिय़ों को हराने वाले मनिका के पास विश्व में 16वें नंबर की पोलकानोवा के नियंत्रित और दमदार खेल का कोई जवाब नहीं था। उन्होंने 0-4 (8-11, 2-11, 5-11, 7-11) से यह मैच गंवाया। मनिका इससे पहले अचंता शरत कमल के साथ मिश्रित युगल में भी बाहर हो गई थी। वहीं, दूसरी ओर टेबल टेनिस में अपना चौथा ओलंपिक खेल रहे अचंता शरत कमल ने शुरू में पिछडऩे के बाद अच्छी वापसी करते हुए टोक्यो ओलंपिक खेलों की टेबल टेनिस प्रतियोगिता में सोमवार को यहां पुरुष एकल के तीसरे दौर में प्रवेश किया लेकिन महिला एकल में सुतिर्था मुखर्जी सीधे गेम में हारकर बाहर हो गई। शरत कमल ने 49 मिनट तक चले इस मैच में पुर्तगाल के 20वीं वरीयता प्राप्त टियागो अपोलोनिया को 4-2 (2-11, 11-8, 11-5, 9-11, 11-6, 11-9) से जीत दर्ज की। उन्हें मंगलवार को तीसरे दौर में चीन के मौजूदा चैंपियन मा लांग की कड़ी चुनौती का सामना करना होगा। लांग अभी विश्व चैंपियन भी हैं। उन्होंने इस खेल से जुड़ा हर खिताब जीता है
