भारत ने इन खेलों में अपना सबसे बड़ा 127 सदस्यीय दल उतारा है जिसमें 56 महिलाएं शामिल हैं। उद्घाटन समारोह में लेकिन भारत की तरफ से 19 एथलीटों और छह अधिकारियों के दल ने हिस्सा लिया। मार्च पास्ट में हिस्सा लेने वाले छह अधिकारियों में दल प्रमुख बीरेंद्र प्रसाद बैश्य, उप दल प्रमुख डॉ प्रेम वर्मा, टीम डॉक्टर डॉ अरुण बासिल मैथ्यू, टेबल टेनिस टीम के मैनेजर एमपी सिंह, मुक्केबाजी कोच मोहम्मद अली कमर और जिम्नास्टिक कोच लखन शर्मा शामिल हैं।
ब्रिटेन के मोहम्मद सबीही ओलम्पिक खेलों के इतिहास में ब्रिटेन के पहले मुस्लिम ध्वजवाहक बने। मार्च परेड का एक अन्य आकर्षण 12 वर्षीय टेबल टेनिस खिलाड़ी हेंड जारा थे जो सबसे युवा ध्वजवाहक बने। जारा ने अहमद साबेर हमचो के साथ सीरिया के ध्वजवाहक की भूमिका निभायी।

अंतर्राष्ट्रीय ओलम्पिक समिति (आईओसी) के प्रमुख थॉमस बाक ने दलों की तरफ हाथ हिलाते हुए उनका अभिवादन किया । आयरलैंड के बाद अजऱबैजान और अफगानिस्तान निकले। अफगानिस्तान के दल में सिर्फ एक महिला एथलीट है।
समूचे आयरिश दल ने जापान के शाह नारुहितो के समक्ष पूरी तरह झुकते हुए उनका अभिवादन किया । वह एकमात्र ऐसा दल था जिसने जापानी समाज में फैले रीति रिवाज का पालन किया जिसमें बड़ों के सामने आदर के तौर पर झुका जाता है।
कोरोना के कारण एक वर्ष विलम्ब से शुरू हुए टोक्यो ओलम्पिक का आज टोक्यो के नेशनल स्टेडियम में विधिवत उद्घाटन हो गया । हालांकि स्टेडियम में कोरोना के चलते एक भी दर्शक मौजूद नहीं था।
उद्घाटन समारोह की शुरुआत आकर्षक लाइट और साउंड प्रदर्शन से हुई जिसके बाद जापान के शाह नारुहितो और आईओसी अध्यक्ष थॉमस बाक जापान के राष्ट्रीय गान के लिए खड़े हो गए। जापान के राष्ट्रीय गान को शिरो सागिसु ने गाया। इससे पहले कोरोना से मरने वालों के लिए एक मिनट का मौन रखा गया।
